My latest piece for AJ+ looks at how anti-Blackness and anti-Haitianism are so deeply ingrained in the Dominican Republic that they are often ignored or defended. You can watch the full piece on AJ+’s YouTube!

I already know ima get a lot of hate comments for this story but THIS IS FACTS, THIS IS JOURNALISM. So, instead of arguing with me, do your Googles, babes.

This is essentially part two of my story on “How Latina America Tried To Eliminate Black People—And Failed.” While that story looked at the region as a whole, this one focuses in on a country where it’s estimated more than 70% of the population would be racialized as Black…

But we all know how some Dominicans view Blackness 😅. We address that and sooo much in this video, including the Trujillo dictatorship, the Indio vs Black label, denationalization laws, and human rights abuses in the bateyes.

I was the lead producer 💁🏾‍♀️, which meant I:
- pitched, researched, & wrote the script
- conducted all the interviews
- found all the broll & edited the first draft
- ideated the animation graphics
- narrated/did the voiceover

If any country was going to convince me to break my “no colonizer countries” travel rule it would’ve been Portugal…

So when I had less than a month to use my annual $300 travel credit from my @capitalone Venture X card, I figured why not go explore a new city for 24 hours.

A $100 for two from Marrakech + a “free” night at one of Lisbon’s top hotels meant we were off ✈️

But umm don’t fight me…this trip just solidified my rule lmao. Maybe it was because we went on a Monday when everything was closed or because we didn’t get to do the two things we really wanted to do to learn about the city’s Black culture & history

Pero Lisbon didn’t live up to the hype for me 😅. I would say maybe next time it will but I doubt there will be a next time lol

I booked this photoshoot with @graz_and_marrakech_photoshoots through @airbnbexperiences and it was easily one of our best decisions in Morocco

Then we stumbled into the Perfume Museum and ended up being able to make our own custom perfumes!
• the whole process took about 3 hours
• it is VERY thorough. You smell over 100 different oils and write down all your favs. Afterwards, the instructor will recommend which ones can be blended as top,middle & base notes. I ended up liking mainly base notes so my scent can work in its own or as an enhancer as well
• can make 30ml or 100ml bottle

💸 Tour booked through @ecodesertmorocco , which included transportation, accommodations, camel ride, breakfast & dinner. Lunch was an additional cost.
⏱️ We did the 3-day Sahara Desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga (Sahara) and back to Marrakech. You can also choose options that start & end in Fes instead if you’re continuing north
🚙 We chose to drive straight to the Sahara on day 1, meaning it was a 9-hour drive one way. Long journey but allowed us to maximize our time in the actual desert

🏜️ Must-do experiences included:
⤷ Visiting Khamila Village for Gnawa music
⤷ Camel ride at sunset to your camp
⤷ Stargazing (you’ve never seen stars like this!)
⤷ Desert glamping
⤷ ATV riding across the dunes (additional cost)

💡 Pro tips:
⤷ Pack layers! We went in February so the days were hot but nights got surprisingly cold
⤷ Bring a scarf to protect from sand and sun
⤷ Extra wipes are essential (sand gets EVERYWHERE)
⤷ Book a hammam spa day after your return - your body will thank you

Overall, we’d rate our Sahara Desert experience an 8 out of 10

As a couple who doesn’t eat pork or drink alcohol, Morocco was a paradise 🙌🏾

Booked this incredible food tour through @airbnb Experiences and it was easily one of the best food tours we’ve been on. Our guide took us through local neighborhoods to spots tourists never find.

I found Moroccan food interesting because it’s sweet & savory at the same time. Overall really enjoyed everything we tired.

Pro tip: Always book a food tour early in your trip. If you fall in love with something (like I did with Msemen), you can eat it every day for the rest of your stay!
