7 Epic Things To Do Indoors In NYC
Do you need some ideas for things to do indoors in NYC for a rainy day? Having spent about two years living in New York after college, I’ve had my share of experiences outdoors and indoors, but it had been two years since I returned to NYC, and the occasion was even more special: my boyfriend’s birthday. Back in the city, we fell in love in…Coincidentally, it aligned with his favorite basketball team playing in New York—his first time seeing them live. Sadly, he’s a winter baby, so what better excuse to find some new non-touristy things to do indoors in NYC?
My boyfriend’s birthday was on a Thursday, so I figured, why not make this surprise into a weekend trip. The mission was to uncover some cool indoor activities—places neither of us had explored before. Even though the whole trip was centered around celebrating his day, these indoor activities are honestly perfect for anyone visiting the city during any season. Seriously, these spots made our trip super memorable.
Here are seven epic things to do indoors in NYC:
1. CATCH A BASKETBALL GAME
My boyfriend is an OG Celtics fan. They happened to be playing against the Nets on his birthday, so I surprised him with some tickets. It was so cute seeing the little kid in him jump out once we reached the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. If you’re a big basketball fan, I highly recommend trying to catch a game.
2. AURA READINGS AT MAGIC JEWELRY NYC
Aura readings are something I have wanted to do forever. For $40/person, you get your picture taken with a special camera and an explanation of what the colors mean. It was a fantastic experience mainly because of how accurate it was. She could tell we were creatives, very family-oriented, and had stressful weeks due to work and school.

3. GO TO A BROADWAY SHOW
If you’ve been prepping to be on a game show your entire life, this activity is for you. Game of 1000 Boxes is a private live game show that tests you on teamwork, reaction time, puzzle-solving, trivia, and more. Teams are teams of two or four, and the game lasts about an hour. The highest-scoring team wins a random prize at the end.
4. GAME OF 1000 BOXES
If you didn’t know by now, we love good food over here. The girls on Tiktok kept recommending this place, so I wasn’t sure if the food would be as good as it was. Not only is the food good, but the ambiance is top tier. Def get the soft pretzels with the truffle butter as an appetizer.
5. JACOB’S PICKLES
Jacob’s Pickles is one of NY’s best-kept secrets. They have a bomb brunch menu, and the portions are massive. And it was cheap. My go-to is the chicken and pancakes with a side of mac n cheese.
6. THE CAULDRON
Take the potions-making class to be transported into a magical world of wizarding. Basically, this is a mixology class. The Cauldron offers non-alcoholic versions of some of the drinks. If you do drink, this would probably be a blast, but for my bf and me as non-drinkers, it was kind of eh. There weren’t as many effects as expected, but we did have a fun time.
7. VR WORLD
Think arcade but only VR games. If you don’t have an Oculus or VR gaming set, this is a good option to experience VR gaming. Not going to lie; I wasn’t a big fan of this place. They didn’t have many games, so there were crazy long wait times/lines to play anything. Great concept but poorly executed.
As much as I hate New York, it does have some cool things to do. It’s also where I met my amazing boyfriend three years ago at Prospect Park in Brooklyn on July 4, so I guess it’s not that bad.
I hope this gave you some ideas for the next time you’re in New York. Feel free to message me with any questions!
