8 Epic Things To Do In Mexico City (CDMX)

Mexico City (CDMX) just got crowned the top destination for culture, art, and workcations, and after spending a week there, I completely understand why.

My best friend was deep in LSAT prep hell, and I was on deadline for a work script, her birthday was coming up, and we both desperately needed a change of scenery. So naturally, we booked a week in Mexico City for the ultimate workcation-meets-birthday celebration combo.

From learning that Mexico once had a Black president to making churros from scratch in a local’s home, every day brought discoveries that had us texting each other “WE’RE DEFINITELY COMING BACK”.

If you’re a lover of history, art, and food, book your flight to CDMX now. I also loved that Mexico City is very workcation-friendly! There are so many coffee shops to work from and many activities and restaurants start/open later in the day, so you genuinely don’t feel like you’re missing out on much during the day. Here’s my list of eight epic things to do in Mexico City!

Best Things to Do in Mexico City

Learn about Mexico’s Indigenous history at the Anthropology Museum

The National Museum of Anthropology is a mind-blowing journey through Mexico’s Indigenous heritage. I planned for two hours and could have easily spent the entire day here. The Aztec calendar stone alone is worth the visit, but seeing authentic Mayan treasures and learning about civilizations that thrived here for thousands of years completely changed my perspective on Mexican history.

There is soooooo much to see here, so give yourself ample time to explore.

Take a day trip to Grutas de Tolantongo Hot Springs

Would you wake up at 4 AM to visit natural hot springs four hours from Mexico City? Because that’s exactly what this adventure requires, and it’s totally worth it. Grutas de Tolantongo feels like Mother Nature’s own spa day – thermal pools, waterfalls, and underground caves that’ll make any work stress melt away.

I booked this tour through Tripadvisor, which included approximately 2 hours at the hot springs, an hour exploring the caves, and another hour at the river. As an adventure traveler, walking through the underwater cave was my absolute favorite part of the experience. Unfortunately, heavy rain the day before closed one cave and the river, but our amazing guide took us to another waterfall and a hot springs area.

Take a Churro Making Class

Here’s something you probably don’t know: churros actually originated in Asia, not Spain! I learned this fascinating fact while making them from scratch in a local’s home during an incredible churro-making class. Andrea was a fantastic guide, and getting the recipes afterward meant I could recreate the magic at home.

This hands-on cultural experience perfectly captures the blend of tradition and international influences that characterizes Mexico City. Plus, you get to eat fresh churros – what’s not to love?

Experience Cafe Culture Like a Local

Mexico City’s cafe scene is absolutely insane (in the best way). The city is perfect for digital nomads and remote workers, with countless stunning cafes that make checking emails feel like a vacation.

Restaurants and cafes typically open at 11 AM or noon, so the city has a very laid-back vibe. We were often the first customers if we arrived too early!

Must-visit cafes:

Madre Cafe: Tons of outdoor seating options and a great atmosphere, though it gets crowded during peak hours.

Panadería Rosetta: The most heavenly smells waft from this cute bakery. Their guava rolls are famous, but honestly, the cinnamon roll was my personal favorite. I’m not kidding when I say I ate breakfast here daily.

Qüentin Café: Killer matcha, Instagram-worthy latte art, and vibes for days. Perfect for people-watching and making work emails feel way less boring.

Explore Chapultepec Castle

This former palace-turned-museum showcases Mexico’s royal history through incredible architecture and exhibits. You’ll explore how Mexican royalty used to live, see panoramic city views, and take endless photos of the ornate interiors.

The castle sits on a hill in Chapultepec Park, offering some of the best views in the city. It’s particularly beautiful during golden hour, and the contrast between the historic palace and modern CDMX skyline is striking.

Step Into Museo Frida Kahlo

It’s like stepping into her wild, colorful mind. Her art, her clothes, even her urn with her ashes – it’s all here in her actual childhood home. The Casa Azul (Blue House) offers an intimate glimpse into the life of one of Mexico’s most renowned artists, and you’ll understand why her work resonates globally.

Essential info: Book tickets at least a month or two in advance – this is one of Mexico City’s most popular attractions

Experience Mexico City’s Incredible Food Scene

The restaurant scene in Mexico City is truly unmatched. From street tacos to high-end fusion, every meal was a highlight. And as someone who doesn’t drink, I love how seriously they take mocktails!

Must-try restaurants:

Restaurante Cedrón: Some of the best French toast I’ve ever tasted. The international food scene here rivals any major city.

KYU Mexico: Hold onto your taste buds because this place will blow them away. Get the Kyutin fries and short ribs entree. I’m still thinking about this place – it was so good we went twice back to back!

Campobaja: Incredible fresh seafood dishes. The ceviche de tomates y pescado and gringa de pescado tacos are unreal.

Taqueria Orinoco: Simple ingredients that somehow create magic. Come for lunch to avoid the usual crazy long lines.

Skip the Tourist Traps: What NOT to Do

Soumaya Museum: It might look cool from the outside, but it was such a letdown compared to other museums, especially after visiting the Anthropology Museum. Trust me on this one, spend your time elsewhere.

Where to Stay in Mexico City

I stayed at Sonder Aria in Roma Sur, and it was perfect for a workcation. This boutique aparthotel offers the comforts of home with luxury amenities, including: dedicated co-working spaces, rooftop areas perfect for working, high-speed WiFi throughout, fully equipped kitchenettes, and gym access.

Roma Sur is a trendy neighborhood that feels safe for solo travelers, with easy metro access and walkable streets lined with cafes and restaurants.

Getting Around Mexico City

Uber is your best friend. I used it exclusively and never had issues. The metro system exists, but for visitors staying a week or less, Uber’s convenience and safety make it worth the extra cost.

Mexico City Weather

Visiting in July, I was pleasantly surprised by the weather. Unlike other major cities that can be sweltering in summer, Mexico City’s elevation keeps temperatures comfortable. There’s so much greenery throughout CDMX that it felt like the city was built within a forest – absolutely gorgeous.

How Many Days to Spend in Mexico City

3-4 days: Hit the major highlights (museums, Frida Kahlo house, main neighborhoods)
5-7 days: Perfect for experiencing the city like a local, including day trips
1+ week: Ideal for remote workers or deep cultural exploration

I spent a week and felt like I got a real taste of the city without rushing. The beauty of CDMX is that you can easily fill extra days – there’s always another neighborhood to explore, a museum to visit, or an incredible restaurant to try.

Final Thoughts: Is Mexico City Worth Visiting?

Absolutely, 100% yes. Mexico City exceeded every expectation I had. The combination of world-class culture, incredible food, stunning architecture, and that perfect work-life balance makes it ideal for any traveler.

The greenery throughout the city, the laid-back restaurant hours, the friendly locals, and the sheer variety of experiences available make CDMX a destination that’ll have you planning your return trip before you’ve even left.

Believe the hype. Mexico City really is that girl, and she’s ready to show you an unforgettable time.
