Cartagena Colombia Epic 4-Day Weekend Itinerary
Cartagena, Colombia, is an ideal weekend getaway for a girls’ trip, baecation, or even a solo adventure. I went as a solo Black woman traveler and had a wonderful time, feeling completely safe. I think 3-4 days is the perfect amount of time to explore the best of Cartagena without feeling rushed.
This itinerary hits the highlights while giving you enough downtime to actually enjoy each experience, whether you’re traveling with friends, your partner, or flying solo.

Day 1: Arrival and Getsemaní Exploration
Land in Cartagena and check into your accommodation in either Getsemaní or the Old City. Take time to settle in and get oriented. Don’t plan anything ambitious on arrival day.
Once settled, explore Getsemaní, which is basically an open-air gallery of incredible street art and murals. You can easily spend a few hours wandering around discovering artwork on every corner. Perfect for photos and getting a feel for the city’s creative energy.
Day 2: San Basilio de Palenque Tour
Book with Travel Palenque for this 6-7 hour experience visiting one of the first free Black towns in the Americas. Founded around 1603 by self-liberated Africans who escaped from Cartagena’s slave ports, this is the only remaining palenque in Colombia. You’ll learn incredible stories about how they used braids to draw escape maps and formed intelligence networks to organize more escapes. The tour includes transportation, traditional lunch, and meetings with community members who still preserve African traditions through language, music, and customs.
Day 3: Rosario Islands Hopping
Head to the Rosario Islands for crystal-clear Caribbean waters and pristine beaches. Most tours include island hopping, swimming, snorkeling, and a fresh seafood lunch on the islands. It’s the perfect contrast to yesterday’s cultural intensity and exactly what you need after all that learning.
Day 4: Caribbean Cooking Class and Champeta Dance Class
Learn to make traditional Caribbean-Colombian dishes and understand how African, indigenous, and Spanish influences created the unique coastal cuisine. You’ll get hands-on experience with local ingredients and techniques, plus recipes you can actually recreate at home.
End your trip with a champeta dance class. This Afro-Caribbean dance originated right here in Colombian coastal communities. It’s an hour of pure fun regardless of your dance skills, and you’ll leave with rhythms that capture the spirit of Cartagena.

Extending Your Cartagena Experience
If you have 2-3 more days, here are your best options:
Luxury Beach Escape
Book nights at Aimarawa Hotel (2 hours from Cartagena) for a true luxury oasis with bungalow rooms, private terraces with jacuzzis, and complete disconnection from city life.
Island Resort Experience
Stay at Sofitel Isla Barú Calablanca (1.5 hours from Cartagena) for gorgeous island resort vibes. Best if you’re focused on pure relaxation rather than more cultural exploration.
Add Medellin to Your Trip
Fly to Medellin for three additional days to experience a completely different side of Colombia. You’ll get mountain views, cooler weather, and incredible Afro-Colombian cultural experiences in a much less touristy setting.
